NameServers and DNS Records

Today in this tutorial, we will learn about the most important part of web hosting services, i.e. nameservers and DNS records. You may know about these keywords but let me tell you that these are important for any website for being in the world of internet. You must be familiar with them but I will share more related information. Let’s start one by one.

Nameservers

Nameservers is a type of DNS server where all the information related to DNS is stored. It is a part of large database of Domain Name System. Web Hosting Service Provider provide nameservers to the users to register their domain over DNS. It is the server that stores all DNS records for the domain.

Nameservers translate the domain name into IP Address and vice-versa to establish better communication between humans and computers. It can also be said that nameservers organizes and routes traffic across the internet.

How to setup nameservers?

As I’ve already discussed that nameservers are used to connect domain to DNS. So, it is set up from the domain panel from where you have taken the domain. This will become more clear with the example. I have a domain name thoughtofnew.tk that I’ve taken for testing purpose from Freenom but I’m using the web hosting services with REDSERVERHOST, so I have to set up custom nameserver of REDSERVERHOST in the domain panel. It can be done simply.

  • Login to your domain panel. Here I’ll login to Freenom.
  • Go to My Domains.
  • Select the domain for which you want to add custom nameserver and then click over Manage Domain.

  • In the next page, click over Management Tools and select Nameservers.
  • Select the option use custom nameservers and enter the nameserver as per your choice and Change Nameservers. Here, I’ve used the nameservers of REDSERVERHOST, hosting provider.

In this way you can simply set up the nameserver. In the same way you can set up the Cloudflare nameservers. Well, some of the hosting service provider like REDSERVERHOST provides domain as well. In that case, you do not have to update the nameserver in domain panel.

Now, proceeding towards the other topic, i.e. DNS records.

DNS RECORDS

DNS Records are the files that are stored in a server having all the information related to a particular domain. These records provide information about the domain including the IP Address associated with the particular domain. Let’s understand it with an example. Suppose you came to know about an organization and check the list that has information related to it such as location, services offered, available hours etc. Here, organization is the domain and the list that gives information is the DNS record of the particular domain. It is mandatory for all domains to have specific set of DNS records.

In the above image, list of DNS records are given that needs to be set up for each domain. Some common types of DNS records include A record, CNAME record, MX record etc. You can check these records in the IntoDNS to validate the updated nameservers.

How to create custom DNS Records in cPanel?

You can simply create DNS records in cPanel by following the below mentioned steps.

  • Login to cPanel account.
  • Get into Zone Editor in Domains section.

  • On the next page, select the domain for which you want to add DNS Record and then click over Manage.

  • List of all the records will appear. Now, click over Add Record to add new DNS record and enter the required details.

  • Enter name, TTL, Type of DNS record and then Record, i.e. IP address and then click over Add Record to save the changes as given in above image. Here I’ve used the IP Address of REDSERVERHOST.

With the above given procedure, you have successfully created custom DNS Record for particular domain. You can also add DNS Record from Simple Zone Editor and Advanced Zone Editor. But these interface did not allows user to create MX Record.
